Ethics Consultations

Despite our best efforts and intentions, some situations sadly remain outside the limit of medical science’s ability to cure. Healing, however, can take many forms. Moments of healing can come by resolving long-term family conflict, reconciling with family members and others, planning for the future, and celebrating the past.

Our Chaplains assist patients and families during difficult times. Treatment decisions for the critically ill or dying often give rise to soul-searching for patients and their families. Advances in medical technology may offer patients and family members the ability to prolong life while at the same time raising challenges to long-held moral or religious ideals.

When ethical questions arise, Chaplains can help engage you and your family in discussions about treatment decisions and end-of-life issues. By asking the right questions and focusing on the transcendent, we may be able to assist you in finding the answers you need to make thoughtful, informed decisions about treatment that preserve your dignity and protect your cultural and spiritual beliefs. Our Chaplains serve on the SMDC Medical Center Ethics Committee and work closely with its members.
