Learning you have a tumor or lesion can be frightening. It’s even more frightening if you’ve been
told the tumor is difficult to treat because of its location in your body.
At SMDC Medical Center, we can offer new hope for treating tumors, both cancerous and benign.
Our expert medical team has CyberKnife, a cutting-edge technology that uses image guidance
technology and computer-controlled robotics to precisely deliver high doses of radiation to a tumor.
Its pinpoint accuracy destroys tumor cells while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissues and organs.
CyberKnife is a non-invasive alternative to surgery. You simply lie comfortably on a special table
while the stereotactic radiosurgery system delivers a treatment. There is no pain and no incision.
Most patients experience minimal recovery time with this outpatient procedure and can return to
normal activities almost immediately. The only common side effect is fatigue.
CyberKnife is designed to treat tumors anywhere in the body with sub-millimeter accuracy. During a
treatment, a linear accelerator within the machine’s flexible robotic arm delivers hundreds of beams
of concentrated radiation to a tumor. Those beams are guided by a computer plan created by a medical
team that includes a radiation oncologist, surgeon and medical physicist.
During a treatment, the Cyberknife continuously tracks the tumor and corrects for any movement,
even from your breathing or heartbeat. Its robotic arm can deliver radiation beams from virtually
any angle, which allows it to be used on tumors in sensitive areas such as the brain, spine and lungs.
