Our Facility
SMDC Medical Center’s outpatient surgery department offers:
- 11 operating suites along with short-stay patient rooms, some with views of Lake
Superior
- Four state-of-the-art endoscopy suites with digital cameras that allow surgeons
and their teams to see high-definition images to guide minimally invasive procedures
- ESWL (extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy) machine to treat kidney stones

Ophthalmology suite, where surgeons conduct common procedures such as cataracts
and more specialized procedures such as corneal transplants and retinal reattachments
- Computer mapping and navigation system for ENT procedures such as sinus repairs
- Brachy therapy, a surgical procedure which precisely maps and then implants radioactive
seeds to treat prostate cancer
- Lasers for eye surgeries, plastic surgeries and other procedures
- Telemetry system, which allows nurses to remotely monitor a patient’s heart rate,
blood pressure and breathing rate as well as blood-oxygen level and electrocardiogram
information.
