Our Facility
The rehabilitation center at SMDC Medical Center is located on the second floor
of the Miller-Dwan Building, 502 E. Second St. Among its features are:
- 44-bed unit with some rooms offering views of Lake
Superior
- Two independent living apartments where patients
and their families can practice everyday living skills in a modified kitchen/laundry
room, bathroom, bedroom and living room
- Spacious and bright therapeutic gym that includes
state-of-the art equipment such as Robomedica, a body-weight support system that
helps patients learn to walk again
- Three “quiet rooms” adjacent to gym for patients
to work on therapy without the distractions of noise or other patients’ activities
- Large occupational therapy room that includes specialized
equipment such as Saeboflex, an orthotic device that helps people with neurological
impairments work on hand grasp and release, and Bioness, which
electronically stimulates arms and hands to recover use and motion
- Modified kitchen where patients can practice everyday
living skills and safety
- Adjacent fitness and therapy center with a lap pool,
therapy pool, exercise equipment and an indoor running/walking track
- Computer room with e-mail and Internet access that’s
available to patients and families 24/7
- Independent Living Center where patients can try
and use adaptive equipment as they progress through therapy and prepare to go home.
We have a variety of wheelchairs, walkers, canes, commodes, shower chairs and other
equipment for use during a patient’s stay. We even have an assistive technology
practitioner who is certified to assess patients and help them find the right equipment.
