Outcome Data
Reviewing patient outcomes
can help you choose a rehabilitation program. Here are the highlights of 2009 patient
outcomes for the Miller-Dwan Rehabilitation Center at SMDC Medical Center.
Overall, in 2009, our programs served 361 new patients.
- Their average age
was 59.3 years
- 60.23 percent were men and 39.77 were women
- 76.9 percent were Caucasian,
2.8 percent Native American and 1.7 percent African-American. The ethnicity of 14.2 percent
was unknown or unlisted.
We measure outcomes based on functional improvements (FIM),
which assess a patient’s ability to do activities such as dress and groom himself
or herself, walk or use a wheelchair, communicate and solve problems. Patients are
scored at admission, at discharge and three to six months after discharge. Lower scores
mean a person is more dependent; higher scores mean more independent.
We also use
a Community Integration Questionnaire to assess whether a person is able to do activities,
such as shop for groceries, prepare meals, arrange social events and deal with personal
finances. We assess whether the person can do such activities independently, needs
help from someone else or needs someone to do these activities.

Disclaimer: Not all patients were used in the outcome data due to lower volumes
in some programs and difficulty placing some patients into categories. Information
on all patients is available on request. Outcome report data include all admitted
patients ages 8 and older. Pediatric data include all admitted patients age 18 and
younger. Outcomes for Pediatrics, Day Rehabilitation and outpatient programs are
not based comparisons to national data. For more detailed information, call (218)
