Stroke rehabilitation
Miller-Dwan Rehabilitation Center at SMDC Medical Center offers an
acute rehabilitation program for people of all ages who have sustained a stroke
that resulted in an activity limitation and who have the potential to return to
community living. Each patient’s program and treatment is based on his or her unique
needs.
Our stroke specialty program is the only program in northern Minnesota to earn accreditation
by the highly respected Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). We’ve been accredited since 2007.
Among the services we offer:
- Highly qualified team of professionals with extensive
experience
- At least three hours of daily therapy on Monday
through Saturday; Sunday sessions are also available as part of an individual’s
treatment plan. We also schedule additional time in recreational therapy and psychological
counseling, important services not offered by all rehab programs.
- Regular care planning conferences for patients and
their families with the treatment team
- Pool therapy
- Health Portfolio, which compiles health information
into a notebook designed to help a patient and caregivers manage ongoing health-care
needs and resources in their community
- One-on-one patient sitter program, which creates
a safe environment free of restraints
- Community outings so patients can practice their
skills in real-life settings
- Patient and family referrals to support groups and
community agencies
- Comprehensive education programs for patients and
families
- Visits from stroke survivors who serve as peer counselors
to patients and their families
- Specialized technology to help with arm and hand
impairments, including Saeboflex, an orthotic device that helps people with neurological
impairments work on hand grasp and release, and Bioness, which electronically stimulates
arms and hands to recover use and motion.
- Robomedica, a start-of-the art body weight support
system that helps patients learn to walk
- Dynavision, a device that increases range of motion
in arms and shoulders; improves balance and reaction times; and teaches compensatory
scanning strategies for those with visual impairments
- Digital Swallowing Station/FEES, which uses a fiber-optic
scope to evaluate swallowing and provide video images to aid in therapy
- Vital Stim, which uses electrodes to stimulate throat
muscles and nerves to aid swallowing
- Expertise in treating spasticity, including
intrathecal
baclofen pump therapy (ITB) and BOTOX
